Amazing Tips to Job Interview Strategies for Teens:

As much as you’d like to be earning some money, the idea of job-hunting can be pretty intimidating. If you’re feeling shy and lacking confidence about getting out there and talking to employers, you are far from alone, according to many career counselors. “Many of the students I counsel are so nervous during an interview that they come across as a bit withdrawn, which may translate into lacking self-confidence or lacking interest and enthusiasm for the position,” observes Lisette Ruiz, a career counselor. Our two-part article offers tips to help you cruise through job interviews confidently and land the job with flying colors. In Part I, we provide interview preparation tips (see Part II for how to handle yourself at the interview):
• Know yourself. Before you even start the job-hunting process, take some time to put yourself under the microscope. The more self-aware you are, the more comfortable and confident you will be in job interviews. Ruiz suggests making a list of your strengths and abilities. Make another list of your achievements. Teen girls in particular may need to work on building confidence. “My experience with teenage girls, including a daughter, is that they tend to be very shy — or painfully modest — about their achievements,” says Phil Hey, director of career services at Briar Cliff University. “Nobody expects a teenage girl to have started a million-dollar company or won a world championship, but even ‘ordinary’ achievements show good performance and other career values,” Hey notes. Sarah Bigham, director of Career Services at Hood College, suggests practicing saying positive things about your skills and abilities.
• Know about the job you’ll be interviewing for. Maureen Crawford Hentz, who hires teens for specific jobs at the New England Aquarium, likes to test applicants’ interview preparation. “If an applicant comes in to interview for an Aquarium Guide position and tells me that she thinks she will be feeding the animals and ‘stuff,’ I know that she has not read the job description,” Hentz says.
• Think about yourself in relation to the job. “Read through the job description thoroughly so you know what they are looking for and the skills you possess that match,” suggests Gail Fox, assistant director of career services University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. “Then think about your personality and ask family and friends what they particularly like about you. Bring this information into the interview as well. It shows that you prepared yourself, that you are thoughtful and cared enough about the employer to bring them your best.” Laura Yu of the career services office at Virginia Tech advises asking yourself, “What do I have that would make someone want to hire me for this job?”
• Understand what employers are looking for. “The primary concerns for most employers talking to teens are these: Will you be here as scheduled? If we are willing to teach you, are you willing to learn?” says Gale Montgomery, former career services coordinator at Simpson College. “With this in mind, I encourage teens to respond to the questions with frequent reassurances of reliability and capabilities to learn quickly, but with a willingness to ask questions for clarity.” Recent grad-school graduate Jeanie Collins notes that the interviewer is not out to get you. “The interviewer is looking for a person with ordinary qualifications who has the attitude to do an extraordinary job,” Collins observes.
• Practice. Ask friends and family members to conduct practice interviews with you. You can find many lists of commonly asked interview questions on the Internet, including our site’s list of questions, or in interviewing books. Also practice your body language and handshake.
• Plan to dress nicely and appear well groomed. Dress more conservatively than you normally would and even a bit more conservatively than the typical dress at the workplace at which you’re interviewing. Recent college graduate Emily Hamvay, who interviewed for many jobs as a teen, describes the preferred mode of interview attire as “like Sunday church gear.” Among the “don’ts” mentioned by career counselors are heavy makeup, open-toed shoes, revealing clothing, short skirts, visible piercings, tattoos, clingy tops, platform shoes, huge earrings, wrinkled clothing, and hair in your face. Carol Yoannone, student performance director at the Community College of Allegheny County, PA, describes a particularly unfortunate fashion choice she once observed at a job fair: “A young woman walked in with a spaghetti strap evening dress.” Read our article, When Job-Hunting: Dress for Success.
• “Have an ‘old’ person approve your proposed interview outfit before you buy it or wear it to an interview,” advises Hood College’s Sarah Bigham, who notes that she sees “way too many Ally McBeal-type skirts, low-cut tops extravagant fingernails, etc.” Bigham also cautions against jewelry that clangs and makeup that glitters. “Anybody who is old enough to be your mother should look you over before you leave the house,” Bigham suggests. She also advises that teens wear their interview outfits and shoes before the interview — for more than a few minutes. “You want to be comfortable on your big day!”
• Be prepared to be interviewed even when you’re not expecting to. If you’re cruising the mall filling out job applications, don’t be surprised if some employers want to interview you on the spot. The nature of the jobs that teens typically seek makes impromptu interviews more likely than they are for other age groups, and they are especially likely if the store has a “help-wanted” sign in the window. Since you could be interviewed at any time, you should dress appropriately when you go out to fill out applications. Also be mentally prepared, and don’t balk if an employer asks to interview you on the spot.
• Consider enlisting moral support. Emily Hamvay describes her unusual approach to interviews as a teen. “To help with the butterflies, I would ask my mom to go to the interview with me and stay in the car while I was interviewing.” The Mom-in-the-car plan works well, Hamvay says, because “if you don’t do so well or you don’t get the job, you have a easy escape plan. Or if you forget something, such as a pen, references, safety pins, moms are famous for being prepared with all of the essentials.” Hamvay says mom is also crucial for providing the all-important “good luck smooch,” and she might just buy you ice cream after the interview.
• Set realistic expectations about salary. Let’s face it; most teen jobs pay minimum wage. You should certainly be aware of what the current minimum wage is so you’re not surprised and so you don’t ask for less than minimum wage. If the situation seems right, you could even consider asking for more, as Trinity Hundredmark, a law student, did as a teen. “One thing I learned on my interview at a local retail store was to ask for more than I thought I was going to get,” Hundredmark recalls. “Everyone had told me that I was going to get minimum wage because of my age no matter what I did. I threw caution to the wind and decided to ask for more, telling my interviewer that the store could hire someone at minimum wage, or they could take me for a little more money, but much better work. The manager chose me, even at the higher price. Don’t underestimate your worth.”
• Know what hours you can work, and prepare to be flexible. Consider school, homework, extracurricular activities, sports — anything that takes up your time. Be able to clearly articulate to the employer the hours you are available to work. If the employer needs more availability, and you really want the job, consider giving up a nonessential activity.

Tips to Interview Preparation

This a list of the steps to take before you go to the job interview

1.Research the company. Look for your breakthrough* questions.
2.Research the industry. Look for your breakthrough* questions.
3.Research the person who will be interviewing you. Look for your breakthrough* questions.
4.Make a list of the skills you think someone who gets the job will need.
5.Prepare stories that demonstrate that you have those skills.
6.Green flag your resume — that means knowing what parts of your resume make you perfect for the job.
7.Red flag your resume — that means taking a critical look at it to see what might make the interviewer question whether you are right for the job. Prepare to overcome those objections.
8.Know exactly what points you want to make about yourself to show that you are the person for the job.
9.Prepare your answer to “Tell me about yourself” so that it relates directly to the skills you need for the specific job you are interviewing for.
10.Prepare answers for “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” so that you are on target for the specific job you are interviewing for.
11.Prepare your answer to “Why did you leave your last job?” and “How long have you been unemployed?”
12.Think of the questions you would ask if you were the interviewer. Be ready for these questions.
13.Have your breakthrough* questions ready.

Job Fair : Get ThisJob - Preparation and Follow Through

Job fairs can be crowded, busy, competitive and overly confusing events. But they do offer you the opportunity to contact many potential employers all within one place, and they can help you land that job. Here’s what you need to do to get the most out of these events:

1. Do advance research. Your goal is to target the most promising employers at upcoming job fairs. To do that, you need to know who those employers are and what they offer. Usually, the promotional materials or advertisements for job fairs will list participating employers and the general types of jobs they have open. Get online and search for information about the companies you are interested in. Knowing more about the companies than the other job seekers who visit their booths will help you make a memorable impression. The more you know, the better.

2. Bring enough résumés. Bring at least 30 copies of your résumé (more if it’s a large event).

3. Be prepared to fill out applications. Most companies will not accept a résumé instead of an application. So even if you provide them with a nice résumé, you’ll probably be asked to fill out an application form, too. Be sure to bring several pens and a prepared sheet with the basic information you’ll need to complete job applications on the spot. This is better than taking the applications home and sending them back later, as many job seekers will do. You’ll beat them to the punch!

4. Dress for success. First impressions are important. Just because job fairs tend to be friendly, informal events, don’t be too casual. Dress and act professionally, be enthusiastic, and remember to always smile.

5. Arrive early. Pick up a booth-location map and plan your route. By arriving early, you may be able to get in and out before it gets too crowded. Visit your targeted companies first, then “shop around” and do some networking.
6. Think “Quality” over “Quantity.” It’s much better to spend quality time talking with only a few, well-targeted employers who are looking for your specific skills, than to drop off your résumé at every booth you see.

7. Be prepared for interviews. Some companies may want to do short, on-the-spot interviews at the job fair. Be prepared to talk about your best selling points, the assets and skills you will bring to the company. Doing research, as suggested in Step 1, will help you to design your answers to meet the companies’ specific needs. As the interview is wrapping up, remember to ask what the next steps are.

8. Keep track of where you submit your résumés. Collect business cards and make a list of the companies you apply for. Jot notes about conversations you have with representatives or topics discussed during interviews. This will help you when following up later.

9. Send thank-you letters. Send thank-you letters within 24-48 hours to each of the companies/representatives you spoke with. Even if there was no real interview, doing this will help you to stand out in their minds among the hundreds of job seekers who visited their booth during the job fair. Tell them how much you appreciated the time they took to talk with you and answer your questions. Mention the name or location of the fair and the positions you discussed, and reiterate your interest in working for their companies.

10. Follow up. Depending on their answers to your “what are the next steps” question (see Step 7), follow up appropriately with the companies for which you applied.

Follow these steps, and that busy, crowded job fair may just land you the job of your dreams!

Questions for Your Self BeforeFacing Job Interview

A big job interview is coming up and you are feeling very confident. You have anticipated the questions they might ask and have prepared some great answers. Fresh copies of your resume are sitting in your backpack. Wait a minute. Did you say backpack? Are you really going to walk into a job interview carrying a backpack? Next thing you’ll say is that you’re planning to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Uh-oh. You better ask yourself these questions before you get dressed.
What should I wear?
Generally, it’s a good idea to wear a suit for a job interview. Go with something simple, in a neutral tone. The more conservative your field is, the more conservative your suit should be. For example, if you’re applying for a job in an investment firm, go with a navy blue or dark gray suit.

What if my interview is for a job in a more casual setting?
It’s a good idea to match your interview attire to the pr

Why Is The Job Interview So Important?

The human resources department is responsible for screening candidates to verify the information on their resumes. Once that is done, qualified candidates are generally passed along to the manager of the department in which they’ll work. As a department manager or supervisor, it’s likely you’ll be working very closely with the job candidate you hire.
That’s one reason it’s so important that you’re very thorough in your interview. Another reason is that your decision is an indication of your ability to manager. A good or bad choice will reflect on you. Your new hire will interact not only with you, but with your boss, your colleagues, your staff, and your customers. You’ll be responsible for making sure the candidate:
can do the job well;
fits in well with other members of your department; and
will be able to work well with you
Preparing For the Interview
Before you begin interviewing candidates, you should prepare some general questions. You will also want to take some time to review each job candidate’s resume or application. This will give you the opportunity to prepare questions that are relevant to the candidate’s work history, such as:
What did you like best about working at XYZ Company?
What did you like least about working at XYZ Company
Describe your manager at PQR Inc.
Conducting Yourself On the Interview
How you conduct yourself on the interview is as important as how the interviewee conducts him or herself. You should try to put the interviewee at ease since that will help insure that you get more honest answers. However, you shouldn’t give the impression that you are relaxed type of manager if you aren’t one. Don’t forget — it’s as much about the potential employee deciding if this place is right for him or her as it is about you deciding if the candidate is right for the job. If this isn’t a good match, from either party’s perspective, it’s best to find out now. It’s very important to be polite and considerate. Keeping the candidate waiting, or taking phone calls in the middle of an interview reflects poorly on you and your company.
This person you are interviewing may some day work for you, or, in this fast moving world, you may someday work for him or her.

What Dress Can Tell You in Job Interview?

The javanese people say “Ajining diri saka busana”. It means that the honor of some one can be from the way he dresses. Some one will know who you are from the way you dress.

Is it true that clothes make the man or woman? Do people form an opinion about us based on the way we dress? I think so. Does that mean we should avoid any sense of individuality in the workplace? Of course not. But, I do feel that some types of clothing are inappropriate for certain work environments. In addition, some work environments have a dress code that all who work there must follow. Sometimes you won’t find these dress codes in writing; but if you look around you’ll find that all employees are dressed in a similar way.
For example, I worked at an investment bank some time ago. Each fall a new group of analysts would join the company fresh out of college. They all looked alike (gender differences aside) right down to the way they wore their hair. There was one young woman, though, who didn’t fit in. She worked as hard as everyone else, but her skirts were a little shorter, and the colors she wore were a little brighter, than those worn by her colleagues. Within a month or so, she lost that individuality and blended right in. This gives us something to think about when choosing an occupation, or a place of employment. Do we want to fit in, or do we want to be able to express our individuality on the job? The answers to these questions should play an important role in our career plans.

Let’s say we work somewhere where expressing one’s individuality is okay. Does that mean anything goes? That brings us back to being judged based on what we wear. Erin Brockovich shows off her “individuality” with every outfit she wears. Is it improper to wear revealing attire to work? Well, I think it depends on where you work and whom you work with. A teacher should stay away from revealing attire, for instance. A retail sales clerk might be able to get away with it. In other words, good judgment is important here. If what you wear is distracting to others then maybe it’s time to go shopping.

Have The Problems of Wearing Inappropriate Dress Job Interview

When the movie Erin Brockovich came out it sparked a controversy. The title character, played by Julia Roberts, was based on a real person. Brockovich, a single mother who worked at a law firm, discovered some real estate files that included medical records. Curious about this, she began to investigate and discovered 600 families living near the Pacific Gas & Electric plant who all suffered from a mysterious illness. She went on to lead a class action suit against the company.

So what’s the controversy and how does it relate to career planning? It’s not the fact that Brockovich fought the “big guys.” It’s the way Julia Roberts, as Erin Brockovich, dresses, talks, and acts. And don’t think the actress dressed that way to give spice to the movie either.

Apparently Roberts portrayal of Brockovich was accurate. Here’s what About.com’s Guide to Hollywood Movies/Reviews J. Sperling Reich had to say:
“Brockovich is hardly a model employee, she wears racy clothing, uses “colorful language”, and is quite open about her opinions, good and bad, of everything around her. Her co-workers eye her with dislike and mistrust.”

The Ways of Dressing to Face Your Job Interview

Unless your job requires you to wear a uniform, choosing clothing for work can be difficult. Of course there are industry standards, such as the navy blue suit for accountants and bankers. What do you wear, however, if you work in an industry where there really isn’t a typical style of dress? Complicating the matter further are companies that allow more casual attire. How do you keep from crossing over the line from casual to sloppy? What about the job interview? You want to look your professional best, but you also want to appear as if you “fit in”. Here are some pointers:

First and foremost, no matter what you wear, your clothes should be neat and clean.
Keep your shoes in good condition.
Your hair should be neatly styled.
For women: makeup should be subtle.
Nails should be clean and neat and of reasonable length.
Dress for the job you want. If you aspire to be a manager, dress like managers in your company do. Although in theory most people love the idea of not having to wear a suit to work, they are often confused by the casual dress policies some employers have instituted over the last few years. Here are some simple rules:

Casual doesn’t mean sloppy. Your clothing should still be neat and clean.
You can’t go wrong with khakis and a sport shirt or a nice sweater.
If you are going to a meeting or making a presentation, professional attire may be in order. When you go on a job interview you want to give the impression that you fit in. One way of doing this is to dress like employees of the company do. If you can, “case the joint” prior to showing up for an interview. By this I mean, hang out in the parking lot or in front of the building when employees are arriving for or leaving work in order to observe what they are wearing. If you see people dressed in casual attire, remember to take it up a notch. An interview requires more formal dress. While you may not have to wear a suit and tie, you should wear dress pants and a blazer or sport jacket.

STOP! Don’t throw away those business outfits you no longer want. If you have decided to revamp your wardrobe, there is an organization that needs your help. Dress For Success is a New York City based program that provides business attire to women who are looking for work but can’t afford appropriate interview attire –a kind of catch-22. This page lists similar programs across the United States. If you have clothing to donate, you should contact one of the programs listed.

Tips When You Want to Face Job Interview Preparation

Do you think that facing job interview is an easy thing. The answer is absolutely not. Job interview is something that is very frustating and can make you stressed. Many times you face the interview but still are not accepted. Herewith, some tips when you want to face job interview.

1. Research the company you will interview with. There is no longer a need to go into a job interview ‘cold’. The internet is a vast resource of company information. From how the company started and who is the current head of the company to their latest products and company slogan, this information and more is just a click away. Doing your homework will make you feel more comfortable about your first “company meeting” because the company and its representative will not feel like total strangers.
2. Practice your answers to common and not so common job interview questions. From “Why did you leave your last job?’ and “Why should we hire you for this position?”to “How many gas stations are there in the US” and “What if I told you this interview is not going very well?”, your response will tell the interviewer how well you think on your feet and how you handle pressure. Ask a friend to help you practice and to honestly let you know how you are doing. You will feel calmer when you mentally prepare yourself for almost any job interview question.
3. Practice your entire job interview presentation. Beyond practice answers to questions, it is just as important to be aware of your voice and body language. Are you speaking clearly? Are your arms folded? Do you appear interested and eager or bored or afraid? Your body language could be betraying you. Again ask a friend to help you practice. Or use free mock job interview video clips to get honest feedback about your entire job interview presentation skills. It’s best to identify, make and correct your mistakes before you’re your next face to face job interview.
4. Plan your job interview attire. It is recommended that men wear a conservative suit and women wear a conservative suit with minimal jewelry, makeup and accessories. Make sure clothing is in good condition, clean and pressed. Even if your research shows the work environment is pretty casual, at the very least, dress one step above the level of the job you are interviewing for.
5. Bring only necessary take alongs to the job interview. Make sure you have specific directions about the location of the job interview. Ask for the name, title and a contact telephone number for the person who will conduct your job interview. Bring extra resumes with you. Also, bring questions you have about the company, and the job you are applying for. Note: Your job interview is not the time to ask questions about compensation, flex time and vacation days.
6. Display good manners before, during and after your job interview. Your job interview begins the moment you arrive on the company’s property. Be on time. In fact, arrive 15 minutes early. Greet and address the receptionist or the person that welcomes you with respect. Do not answer your cell phone or use a similar device while waiting, or during the interview. Just turn it off. If your culture allows, firmly shake the hand of the interviewer before the job interview begins and after the job interview ends. Thank the receptionist on your way out.
7. Send a thank you letter. Use technology to send a hand written note. By using email, you’ll be able to see that it was received by the person or persons you intended. Not only will the note make a great impression, but it will make a lasting impression long after the conclusion of your face to face interview

The Body Language in Job Interview

If you want to face job interview there are many things to do because Job interviews are your opportunity to communicate to the prospective employer why they should hire you. During a face to face job interview, you want your spoken words to match your unspoken words. And gestures and facial expressions can say a lot. Your overall presentation, which includes your body mannerisms, can be just as important as the verbal answers you give during your face to face job interview.

If you want your body to say:

1. “I am interested…” Lean forward a little with your head slightly tilted when the interviewer is speaking, particularly about the company, the job description and duties. This can show the interviewer that you are ‘physically’ listening and interested in what is being said. This is also an opportunity to show you know the importance of your listening skills and using your 2 ears over your 1 mouth.
2. “I am comfortable…” Have a genuine smile. A fake, plastered on smile just won’t do. Imagine how good you will feel your first day on the job or after receiving your first check. That is the smile you want to convey during your face to face job interview.
3. “I am trustworthy…” Maintain good eye contact. It is an opportunity to establish trust with the job interviewer. But, be careful to avoid intense eye contact. Instead, aim to maintain eye contact about 75% of the time.
4. “I am happy for this opportunity and I appreciate your time…” Give a firm hand shake at the start of the interview and at the end of the interview, if your culture allows. Think of your handshake as a piece of uncooked spaghetti, as opposed to a wet noodle.
5. “I am alive and energetic…” Use hand gestures to express yourself . But only to bring home certain points or for emphasis. Don’t overdo it. You don’t want to look like a spastic chicken.
6. “I am confident, prepared and alert…” Sit up straight with your shoulders back . Do not sit with your arms folded across your chest or with your hands. Instead you want to exhibit a an ‘open’ posture. Sit still and do not fidget. You do not want to make your interviewer sea-sick.
Your self- awareness of your job interview body language can be uncovered through the practice of your nonverbal communication skills prior to your next job interview. You can practice in the mirror, with a friend or family member or video tape yourself to see how you will really come across to the job interviewer.

News and Figures about Jobs in Singapore

Dutch electronics giant Philips says it will set up a hi-tech light emitting diode, or LED, production plant in Singapore.

This will be its first LED manufacturing facility in Asia.

Philips expects the new plant to create 900 new jobs and help double its total LED output by 2007.

Philips is keen to consolidate its leadership position in the global LED market which is worth US$5 billion in annual sales and growing at an average rate of 25 percent per annum.

It has revealed plans to take over a vacant Maxtor plant in Singapore and has already scheduled production to begin by early 2007.

Mourad Mankarios, CEO, Philips Electronics Singapore, said: “It was a factor in being able to be up and running in a shorter period than if we had to get a piece of land and build a plant and do all sorts of things. So that was the contributor and a very key contributor in the decision making process.”

Lightings, including LED products, currently accounts for about 16 percent of Philip’s overall revenue.

The company declined to detail the size of the Singapore investment, but says it is significant and will help to double the group’s LED output.

Mourad Mankarios said: “Singapore was chosen as the site for the new LED plant. This plant when it is fully operational will have about 900 employees. This is a leading edge technology which will basically boost our position in the market place for LED technology worldwide.”

The global lightings market is worth some US$26 billion in annual sales.

Philips already has several facilities in Singapore that manufacture mainly consumer products.

Last year, the Singapore arm reported annual sales of about S$1.2 billion. - CNA/ch

Mr. Mas Ronaldo, Dir. Research & Development
Merky Laboratories
7645 Corruption Square
Washington, DC 99797

Mr. Ronaldo:

I am very interested in joining the Merky team of Biological Scientists. Merky Laboratories has generated many of the most progressive psychotropic drugs in the last 10 years and I would like to lend my expertise to develop even better prescription drugs.

Having worked with Fisher Corporation for the past nine years in Research & Development, I learned a great deal about the modern application of psychotropic drugs. Mentally ill people are able to live normal lives and raise well-adjusted children. If it were 20 years ago, these same people would be on the streets, in asylums, or dead. Biological Scientists and Researchers have given people a legitimate second chance.

We still have a long way to go. I spent much of my tenure with Fisher working with other Biological Scientists to develop safer psychotropic drugs, drugs that patients can wean off of with relative ease. From a marketing standpoint, psychotropic drugs that pose fewer risks to the patient will be incredibly attractive to the prescribing doctors.

I am eager to meet with your team of Biological Scientists and see if we have a match. Along with an acutely analytical mind, I also have the attitude of an idealist. I believe our work is some of the most important work being performed on the planet. Along with my work ethic, I bring focused passion for my work.

Please give me a call to set up an interview. I am eager to meet you in person. I have read much of your work and would love to discuss it in person.

All my best,
